History of Tantra
Tantra is an ancient art, philosophy, and a way of living, which empowers its followers to strive for material and spiritual achievements, and accomplish liberation from ignorance. It has deep roots in many Asian countries, namely India, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Tibet, and incorporates various practices, rituals, and rites. The Tantric followers are often guided by a guru, who can help them on their way to achieving their goals, and uniting the microcosms with the macrocosms. Although not a religion, Tantra has a close relation to Buddhism, as well as Yoga and the Vedic tradition, and with the help of a few prominent Western followers, it has been popularized in Europe and the United States as well. Today, Tantra could mean anything from sensual and erotic massage to a group of exercises that can help you become a better person, achieve great goals, and accomplish more in your life. Regardless if you are interested in the wholesome approach or just in the different practices such as Tantric massage, Tantra could open a whole new World to you.
The original meaning of Tantra has become a little blurred since reaching the western world. Its general meaning is now associated with sexuality more than the spiritual origins. Tantra, as experienced in eastern discipline does include a sexual freedom as part of its element, but it is so much more focussed on developing spirituality. The actual aim of Tantric massage is to help a person into altered states of awareness or consciousness through a series of specially developed breathing and body awareness exercises. The massage helps to focus the mind and the special energy associated with sexuality to open gateways of the mind to higher realms.
What is Tantra and Tantric massage?
Tantra is not a new religion or spiritual discipline; in fact there is evidence to suggest that it goes back more than 20,000 years. Originating as a pagan worship of the act of love, Tantra was well known to promote fertility. In fact some aspects of it today are used for similar purposes, as well as help overcome barriers and obstacles to enjoying the sexual experience in full.
It is believed that Tantra has only been in existence in India for around the last 1200 years or so, and only really came about as an act of defiance or rebellion against the strict priesthood at that time. Unfortunately, this open practice of sexual and spiritual union was forced underground when temples dedicated to the practice were destroyed and many practitioners killed.
There are said to be two paths to Tantra: a right hand path and a left hand path. The right hand path is called the dakshina-marga and the left hand path is the vama-marga. It is the left hand path that is more closely associated with the physical acts of intercourse and release of energy to achieve spiritual oneness. There are two distinct energies named after the Hindu gods, Shakti and Shiva. Shiva is the male energy and Shakti is the female energy. Both sexes have both energies, however, there is a recognised belief that females are guardians for Shakti energy and males are guardians for Shiva energy. During tantric massage, the actions raise the energy to meet the polar opposites to meld them together to forge one link of both energies. Once merged, the energies combine into a creative force, allowing expansion of the spiritual energy too.
The practice of Tantra allows a person freedom. For so many, the sexual act is considered dirty, shameful or is kept as a guilty secret, Tantra seeks to remove these limitations, allowing full expression of a strong spiritual energy that exists in everyone. Tantra allows any of its participants the opportunity to transcend the mundane and ordinary and expand their awareness to join with a cosmic consciousness full of endless possibilities. Tantra is considered to be the ultimate expression of love for self and the divine by celebrating and embracing that surge of energy that flows through everyone.
For many, sex has become mechanical and is as far away from love as it can go. However, tantric practices help to bridge and repair that gap, so that with meditation, it is possible to once again merge with the power of the divine. You do not have to be a yogi or a guru to experience the deep satisfaction achieved through tantric massage, although there may be differing thoughts on that. The sexual activity under the umbrella of tantric massage is always sought to be a deeply nurturing one, allowing an individual to fully experience the rise of energy within. This is allowed to take place in a safe environment with experienced and qualified practitioners. Enjoying a tantric massage will help you in your daily life as you learn to be less self conscious and more open in your dealings with those people in your life.
